Shape

Opinion differs on what feature should be decided on first; some say carat weight is most important, while others give priority to shape. The fact is, the two operate together, along with Clarity, Color and Cut.

Each diamond shape has its own set of characteristics. Round-cut diamonds show the most brilliance and sparkle; marquise-cut has a way of looking larger than other cuts of the same carat weight; other shapes affect the appearance of the wearer’s finger. Here’s your guide to the various qualities of each shape and how they affect the appearance of your diamond. And remember, our Three-year Insurance Guarantee means that you can never make a bad decision.

Round-Cut

The most popular of all the shapes, round brilliant-cut diamonds show the most fire and sparkle, while being the most adept at hiding imperfections. And because it has a natural inclination toward brilliance, it also allows you to sacrifice color and clarity without losing sparkle.

Princess

The second most popular shape behind round-cut are Princess-cut diamonds. Typically square in shape (though some can be rectangular), Princess-cut stones display strong brilliance and fire, though color can sometimes be noticed in its corners.

Emerald

A rectangular octagonal, Emerald-cuts are sleek and elegant. Their long, open table accentuates the diamond’s clarity. This same feature, however, allows flaws to be noticed more easily and lacks the brilliance of cuts with more facets.

Asscher

Step-cut with cropped corners, this charming shape is very similar to the Emerald-cut, with the exception that it is square. And, like the Emerald-cut, Asscher-cuts highlight diamond clarity. At lesser color grades, though, the color may be visible in its corners. Marquise

An elegant, elongated brilliant-cut stone, the Marquise-cut tends to appear larger than other cuts of the same carat weight. Its length makes fingers look longer and more slender, while its slenderness allows it to accommodate side stones with grace.

Oval

Oval-cut diamonds rival round-cut for brilliance, while providing the added benefit of making fingers seem slimmer and longer.

Radiant

Usually a rectangular or square diamond, the trimmed corners are the hallmark of the Radiant-cut diamond. As with Marquise-cut diamonds, Radiant-cut accommodate side stones easily–baguettes and round diamonds are popular choices in this regard.

Pear

Combining the brilliance of a Round-cut with the elegant length of a Marquise, the uniquely shaped Pear-cut is also known as a teardrop. As with the Marquise, this shape appears larger than other shapes of the same carat weight.

Heart-Shaped

The ultimate symbol of love, the distinctive look of the heart-shaped diamond is the perfect choice for the true romantic.

Cushion

Also known as “pillow-cut,” Cushion-cut diamonds range from square to rectangle. This cut features rounded corners and large facets that highlight the diamond's clarity.
