Clarity
Completely clear diamonds are the most rare, most coveted and most valuable. Most diamonds, however, are not absolutely clear, but rather have what are called inclusions–small imperfections that detract from the diamonds beauty and value. For our customers shopping on a budget, we recommend choosing a diamond with inclusions that cannot be seen by the naked eye. These deliver great beauty and afford the best value. The following will show you exactly how to choose the diamond clarity that suits you and your budget best.
Certification labs use a detailed system of rules and standards to summarize the number, location, size, and type of inclusions present in a diamond. The chart below illustrates the quality categories:
| Clarities |
| FL, IF | Flawless, Internally Flawless: No internal or external flaws. Internally Flawless: No internal flaws. |
| VVS1, VVS2 | Very, Very Slightly Included: Very difficult to see inclusions under 10x magnification. |
| VS1, VS2 | Very Slightly Included: Inclusions are not typically visible to the unaided eye. |
| SI1, SI2 | Slightly Included: Might have inclusions visible with the naked eye. A good diamond value. |
| I1, I2, I3 | Display inclusions visible to the naked eye. Ciara does not carry diamonds of this grade. |
What Clarity Grade is Best?
The IF and FL grades display exquisite clarity. However, for our customers for whom budget is a consideration, we recommend thinking about a diamond of lesser clarity–one with inclusions visible only through magnification. Diamonds graded between VSI and SI2 offer the best values. Simply give us a call, and one of our gemologists will personally inspect the diamond to insure that all inclusions are invisible to the naked eye. And, of course, you always have the added confidence of Ciara’s Three-year Insurance Guarantee.
